second language after Hindi. Therefore all teachers need to teach in
English, even though many (most in rural regions) do not have a good
command of English themselves.
A radio show broadcasted daily from 12.00 till 12.30 called 'English
is fun' may provide some support in schools with a radio, allowing the
teacher and children to listen together. Nevertheless we talked with
teachers about deficiencies in the English language and some (not all)
have indicated that they would like to follow a course in English.
Coming November we start with a small group taught by mr. Tarun Arora
and followed up by us. From January 2011 onwards Kristel Ooms will be
in India for seven weeks and can join the teaching effort. During the
day Kristel will assist teachers with English lessons in school and
after school hours she can support teachers by excercising their
English. We will examine the participating teachers' knowledge after
three/four months. Depending on the results of the tests we can
evaluate the setup, pace and value of the classes. To get everything
off to a good start I will be present during the launch of these new
projects, knowing that Kristel is capable to continue cooperating with
local teachers for the remainder of her stay.
Hari Om, the children's home is also waiting for Kristel with
eagerness to help further improve hygiene and support classes in
English, which are the most pressing issues at the moment.
